Research Assistant



    Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join the Laboratory of Prof Tony Miller at the John Innes Centre based in Norwich, UK.

    The project:

    The opportunity to input more nitrogen from fixation by legumes is of fundamental importance for all agriculture. This project will involve using novel soil sensors to measure the input of soil nitrogen that can be provided by legumes. New legume lines will be compared to measure their capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen and provide this important nutrient to other crops. The project includes working with visiting scientists from China.

    The role:

    This diverse role will include the following tasks, for which full training will be provided:

    • Building and using soil nutrient sensors.

    • Screening of legume lines for N fixing activity.

    • Some bioinformatics analysis of legume sequence information.

    The ideal candidate:

    Candidates should possess a BSc, or equivalent, in Biology or related subject. They should have demonstrated knowledge of plant biology with recent experience of working in a laboratory environment. Expertise in legume and rhizosphere biology is desirable, as is knowledge of soil chemistry.

    Additional information:

    Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime contract for a period of 15 months.
