Age-related / adult-onset hearing loss (ARHL) is a complex neurodegenerative disease and global health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and committed postdoctoral research associate to join the Nolan Hearing Lab and work on a research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust. The overarching objective is to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie the long-known sex-differences in the maintenance of hearing over the life course and determine if sex-specific molecular pathways can be identified that are suitable as potential drug targets in ARHL.
The Nolan Hearing Lab is based within the Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases (Wolfson CARD), which forms part of the world-renowned Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. Research at the Wolfson CARD spans a wide remit across three main Research Themes: Chronic Pain and Migraine; Brain and Spinal Cord Repair; Hearing Loss and Sensory Systems.
The post-holder will work in the lab of Dr Lisa Nolan on a specific theme of work investigating the impact of estrogen-signaling on cochlear synaptic, neuronal and myelin health over the life course. There will be good opportunity to collaborate with other members of the Nolan lab working on aligned projects.
The post-holder will use mouse models to mimic menopause and adopt a multidisciplinary approach combing cutting-edge techniques in electrophysiology, cell biology and transcriptomics and engage actively with collaborators including Dr Anwen Bullen, University College London, Ear Institute, UK (Electron Microscopy) and Dr Matthew Kelley, National Institute for Deafness and other Communication Disorders, Porter Neuroscience Research Centre, USA (Single-Cell RNA-Seq).
The post would suit somebody with previous experience of work with small rodents, a strong interest in Neurobiology or estrogen-signaling and expertise in one or more of the following areas: electrophysiological recordings (ideally auditory brainstem response recordings), surgery (ovariectomies), single-cell or bulk RNA-Seq, RNAscope, light or confocal microscopy. Experience with MatLab or Imaris software would be advantageous, and an active Home Office Personal Licence is highly desirable.
The post is based on Guy’s campus with access to the Nikon Imaging Centre and will benefit from further support from Dr Pawan Dhami, lead of the Genomics and Single Cell Laboratory at Guy’s Hospital.
