    Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for two full-time, fixed term positions as Postdoctoral Researchers with the Erin Research Group (https://sites.google.com/view/erinresearchgroup/home) in the School of Engineering (https://www.universityofgalway.ie/engineering/) at the University of Galway, Ireland.

    These positions are funded by the MaREI Centre (https://www.marei.ie/project/hylight/), the HYDEA (https://www.eu-hydea.eu/) and SH2AMROCK (https://www.sh2amrock.eu/) projects, and the University of Galway through the Strategic Research Fund and the School of Engineering. Both positions are available from 1 January 2025 to contract end date of 31 December 2026.
    The Erin Research Group, led by Professor Rory Monaghan, is a European leader in the applied study of green hydrogen supply chains. Erin researchers provide supply chain modelling studies for green hydrogen projects
    including HyLIGHT (https://www.marei.ie/project/hylight/), GENCOMM (https://hydrogenireland.org/gencomm/) and HYDEA (https://www.eu-hydea.eu/), and green hydrogen valleys including Green Hysland (https://greenhysland.eu/). Professor Monaghan coordinates the SH2AMROCK project (https://www.sh2amrock.eu/), which aims to build and operate Ireland’s first green
    hydrogen valley. The Erin Research Group is part of the Ryan Institute for Sustainable Transitions (https://www.universityofgalway.ie/ryaninstitute/) and the MaREI Centre (https://www.marei.ie/project/hylight/) for Energy, Climate and Marine Research.

    JOB DESCRIPTIONS
    Postdoctoral Researcher 1 will lead the Erin group’s activities on the techno economic and life cycle modelling and optimization of green hydrogen supply chains, with emphases on (i) domestic production, storage, distribution and end-use, and (ii) the role of ports as renewable energy and green hydrogen hubs.
    Postdoctoral Researcher 2 will lead the Erin group’s activities on the techno economic and life cycle modelling and optimization of green hydrogen supply chains, with emphases on (i) transnational transportation of hydrogen via pipelines and ships and (ii) hydrogen derivatives (hydrogen-to-X), including ammonia, fertilisers, methanol, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), synthetic fuels, and other products.
    Specific roles for both positions include:
    1. Leading the development and improvement of Erin’s modelling tools.
    2. Leading the delivery of necessary project outputs on time.
    3. Managing the relationships between Erin and project partners in industry, government, NGOs, and academia.
    4. Leading the preparation of technical and financial reports for funders.
    5. Supporting the activities of Erin through student supervision, funding proposal preparation, and day-to-day group management as needed.
    6. Supporting the delivery of one module, as required by the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering, per academic year.
    7. Leading the dissemination of research findings by publication in journal papers, presentation in international conferences, social media, etc.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
    Essential Requirements:
    • Demonstrably excellent written and spoken English and excellent presentation skills.
    • A PhD in engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a thesis relevant to this topic. (**Candidates who have submitted a thesis prior to start date and awaiting viva (thesis defence) are also eligible to apply. If successful, they will be appointed as a Research Associate until confirmation of completion of their viva.**)
    • Demonstrated expertise in techno economic modelling and/or life cycle assessment.
    • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following programming languages: Python, Julia, Matlab, Octave, or other multi-purpose technical computing languages.
    • A record of publishing your own work as a senior (first, corresponding or last) author in high-impact journal paper publications and/or presenting it at international conferences relevant to this topic.
    Desirable Requirements:
    • Expertise in optimisation techniques.
    • Experience in preparing, delivering, and assessing Bachelors and Masters level classes.
    • Experience in writing research funding applications.
    • Experience in supervising student projects.
    • Experience in project and/or group management.
